Common Misconceptions people often have regarding Twins. Are they true or not?
Being a twin is often considered special. It is a bond that is strongly knit through birth, sharing both body and soul, a connection that clearly cannot be explained in words as it is natural and intrinsic. Twins have often been a very enchanting topic that has grabbed the attention of many readers and research. They often include lifestyles, characteristics and differences of being a twin. However, although research has been conducted regarding twins, the ideologies within society regarding this wholesome duo are often misinterpreted. Thus within this article, several misconceptions regarding twins will be addressed and its validity will be explored.
1.Twins have the same interests and personalities.
To understand this statement, first readers must differentiate between monozygotic and dizygotic twins, where monozygotic twins are identical and dizygotic are non identical or fraternal twins. Based on research , very often identical twins have been proved to share similar interests, however, it has occurred when the twins were isolated separately, where they would attribute similar characteristics unknowingly.
However, this statement alone is not accurate as individuals must understand that twins, despite having the same features, are two completely different beings. The same applies to non-identical twins. Although we share common interests, our personalities differ. For example, being a non-identical twin myself, my sister and I have different interests when it comes to our education, our hobbies, the way we dress and more. Sure, there are certain instances where we would share the same interests such as our choices in music, yet our personalities are divergent. Thus the misconception that twins have the same interests and personalities can be safely resolved through discerning that twins are two separate individual beings.
2. Twins share a telepathic power.
Telepathy has often been researched in terms of twin studies, to investigate how twins could understand each other without any verbal communication, to act in the same manner and to say the same words. Telepathy has always been a mystery, which has never been scientifically proven. However as a twin, I could attest to the fact that twins do share an empathetic link that allows them to feel each other’s emotions without verbally expressing them. It is similar to a gut feeling and similar experiences have occurred in life before.
For example, taking one of my own memories into account, In 2018, during my Advanced Level Examinations, I fell down and cut my leg pretty badly and was taken to the hospital on the very first day my sister went for her exams. Yet when she came home and saw me wounded, she suddenly said that she felt that something was wrong when she was writing her paper. It is then that I began to ponder about twin telepathy.
Nonetheless, even though I agree that twins do share a certain extra sensory perception, it will always remain unknown due to the lack of evidence.
3. Twins are often competitive against one another.
This statement is clearly not misinformed yet phrased in a very negative light, where twins are portrayed as rivals that seek to best each other. It is not entirely true, as this competitiveness is often taken as something positive that helps twins achieve more by competing in a friendly manner. Thus having a twin is extremely lucky as you can share your knowledge and vice versa. Thus, yes twins are often very competitive, yet not with harmful intentions, it is just for fun. It is a knack of finding what one twin is better at than the other, in terms of forming their individuality.
Many misconceptions regarding twins are often relied on their personality, their similar interests that deem to recognise twins as one individual being. Moreover, even though these misconceptions have been validated, the existing ideologies cannot be erased and will continue to exist. Knowing it, the best feeling that I could get as a twin is that I am special like no other, and the bond that exists between us twins is incomparable forever.
